pardon my insanity
I had lunch with a friend today and he paid for part of my meal saying that he has had a lot of people help him out and buy his meals when he was in need. Mind you I'm crazy on painkillers right now because the jaw pain flared up this afternoont, so if I sound crazy or am not thinking clearly please let me know. I was almost sort of insulted that he thought I was too poor to pay for my own meal. Do I look poor? Do I act poor? I don't get it. I wasn't wearing my gutter punk hoodie, but I wasn't wearing new trendy clothes either. I like shopping at GAP, but I generally shop at thrift stores because I have a hard time justifying the price tags on new clothes. That and it is so much more environmentally friendly to reuse clothes rather than manufacture brand new ones all the time. And new clothes are ugly. Seriously now, do I look poor? Or act poor? I can't imagine what I might have said to make this guy think I was poor. He knows I work in the adult industry, and most people assume that I make tons of money there. The guy's a school teacher, so he can't be making all that much more than I am.

*edited to add* as the drugs wear off I realize I did some seriously crazy things when attempting to cut and pin cloth napkins under the influence of vicodin. As in they're all different sizes and not all square.

Yeah, that's kind of weird. While his intention is probably good, that would put me off, too. He could have just said "hey, I feel like paying it forward today, let me treat you to lunch!" instead of implying you couldn't pay for your own. :-\

I don't know this fellow, but perhaps he was trying to be polite and just didn't use very nice wording. Or maybe he meant "in need" because of the fact that you aren't feeling so hot (on painkillers). I don't know how close of friends you are, but I would give it 24-48 hrs, see if it still bugs you, and if it does, maybe ask him about it.

Want to know something funny..I'm a social worker, I earn decent money and always (I hope) appear well dressed and groomed so that most people think I have money and I DON'T, we are piss-poor right now because I have to catch up on bills and more bills after being off work forever, not to mention the fact that I just declared bankrupcy (which is probably how I got there in the first place, with all the "stuff" I have..) so have no credit and no ability to get more (hence our current lack of vehicle), and people look at me suspiciously when I say I have no money..but it's true!

Odd how perceptions can be tricky.

Perhaps he was just feeling nice and buying your food to make up for others buying his. kind of his way of giving back. Doesn't mean he thought you were poor or anything. He just did it to make himself feel better. I've done simular things.

You don't look poor, or dress poor. Sometimes you talk about money struggles in your LJ, which might lead someone to think that you're not poor, but overextended bill-wise...?
He was probably trying to say "Let me buy food today!" and ended up saying it wrong. Tact- some need a clue-by-four to remember to use it.

Whatever, free food man. Invite him out more often and wear a dirty shirt :)

I agree with Siddal. He could have worded it differently. I think I would have been offended too. Are you close enough to this friend to tease them about how they worded it?

I don't think you're crazy.
