Thanks to everyone who helped me with my breakfast issue : ) I ended up finding some gluten free flour in my pantry and made this:
Banana Bread with almost nothing in it
1/4 peanut butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 mashed banana
1/4 water
1 1/4 cup gluten free flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
Preheat oven to 350. Cream together the sugar and peanut butter. Add the mashed banana and water. Add flour, soda, and baking powder. Pour into oiled muffin pans or a glass loaf pan. I baked the muffins for 20 minutes and the bread for a little longer. The recipe made six small muffins with some batter left, so I put that in a bread pan.
It turned out OK, and most importantly Aiden liked it : ) But it was a bit crumbly, like lots of gluten free food.

It's really easy to cook corn over a campfire, if you have a fire pit with metal grating. Wait until the flames aren't quite reaching the grating, put corn (with husk still on) on grating, turn a few times as the husks start to scorch. The corn inside is cooked and super yummy even without margarine or salt.
I have company coming over for breakfast. I just ran out to the store to pick up a few things and forgot they were closing early. One of the kids coming over can't have gluten, dairy or soy. I was planning on picking up a mix and making him banana bread or something. Everyone else is having pancakes, fresh berries and whipped cream. I don't want him to feel left out, but I am so stuck. I only have normal ingredients in my pantry. I could make him scrambled eggs and potatoes, but I really want to make him something fun. Help!
*House? Massive disaster. Dishes stacked in and around sink. Books in boxes, some on shelves, mostly stacked on the floor awaiting to be sold tomorrow. Dust bunnies float about and breed.
*Accomplished today? Got rid of 20 years of sheet music and scores, plus my MA notes. Sorted my photos. Still have two file boxes and a chest of "stuff" to sort through.
*Dinner? Will be pizza. And hopefully either an episode of True Blood (so good!), Party Down, or Scrubs.
*Baby? Miserable, mildly neglected, tired, regressing. Thankfully passed out cold for nap #2. Possibly traumatized from watching an episode of True Blood with us. I'm not sure he should see such lasciviousness, even if he won't remember it.
*Adam? Selling off our wares on Craiglist and burning all of our CDs to an external hard drive. The two dressers, tv, mini dresser (currently manifested as a tv stand), our camping back packs, his trail bike, and a clarinet are posted. We have sold my piano, his fancy street bike, a vintage saxophone and one entertainment chest. Oof. Bookshelves and bed are next.
*Me? Ok. Drinking Laphroaig.

Hi everybody, I'm looking for a fellow vegan or vegans to write a short (could be very very short!) article style thing on vegan travel food. Safe dishes you can order in mainstream restaurants, stuff to pack, tips, anything. Road trips/biking/trains/planes/how-to/recipe s. I am putting together a zine with the theme of "transportation" and I want to get some vegan perspective in there, too. I am already going to do a bit on the Vegan Bus as well.
Anyone interested, please comment here or e-mail leannleake@gmail.com
All contributors get two copies of the zine. If you made a post on this topic previously a reprint would be cool also.

any tricks on how to prevent vomiting?
i have low blood sugar, so if i get a h/a bad enough to vomit, the vomiting & not being able to eat keeps the headache severe enough that i end up in a crazy cycle that's really hard to break--sometimes for months.
sometimes i can meditate enough to get myself to sleep when i feel like i need to be sick, but not always.
it looks like i'm headed into another cycle. any advice would be welcome. =) thx.

We're moving. Holy crap. The house is chaos. Bennett is regressing a little. He MUST be with mama ALL THE TIME>. I am going insane.
Quick question for the mama brain trust: Can you put a car seat in a Uhaul truck? I know they're bench seats. What say you about driving 8 hours with a 13 month old in a car seat in a Uhaul?
ETA: Never mind. We're not all driving down. B and I am flying and Adam is driving. I love my son, but today I'm really burnt out.

My mom sent me this recipe for the most delicious (and healthy!) bread. It's basically a white loaf except for the hefty dose of Red River Cereal, which adds a nice big dose of fiber to every slice. I only made one modification, which was to add some lemon juice. It was an experiment that I think paid off, as I'd heard that lemon juice is an excellent dough conditioner, and yields a fluffier, tastier loaf. The loaf I tasted was both fluffy and tasty.

You can shape it either in loaf tins or freestyle, as I did. The inside crumb is light and soft, despite being so good for you. This might be an excellent bread to use to introduce a reluctant seedy-bread eater to the fold.
( Recipe and more pics under the cut )
See more at The Cast-Iron Darling!
Wulfwalker and I are planning to go to the River Falls contra dance tonight. This is a wonderful rustic dance hall with LOTS of character. It has been too long since I've gone. The longer summer hours should allow me to get some great pics. This is necessary because dark-time pictures are VERY challenged because of the low lighting levels. Capturing crisp movement requires lots of light!

I have tried researching the influence of the Romans on Scotland, but I can barely find any information on this. Does any one know any places where I can find out the extent of the influence on Scotland the Romans had when they invaded - the influence on religion and culture.
Thanks in advance.

I discovered recently that a "Free the Net" wifi node had appeared within range of my building in SF. This was fortunate as the access point that I had previously been leeching from now was no longer unsecured. (Took them long enough...) The "Free the Net" network is a basically the closest thing to free community wifi in SF. There's info about it here:
http://sf.meraki.com
It took a bit of fiddling with my cantenna, but I finally found the right direction (straight out the window) and polarization (horizontal) to get a reasonably stable connection to the access point. It was still a little marginal though, so started looking into various options to improve the situation, hopefully in a way that would not require me to mount an antenna on the roof of the building. (I can get the roof, but I'm on the second floor of a four story building, and at 2.4Ghz, a cable run that long would probably introduce unacceptable signal attenuation.) My first thought was a higher gain antenna, though most of good ones seemed to be quite large and unwieldy. But then someone showed me this:
http://www.metrix.net/valemount-network s-kxs30sg-p-438.html
An 802.11b/g wifi card with 1 watt of TX power. I didn't think they made such things, or that you can buy one in the US, but apparently they do and you can. I ordered one and it arrived today. According to the client survey tool on the remote node, my signal strength more than doubled. (I had been using an Intel 2200BG card previously.) Unscientific web tests show I'm getting about 1.2Mbps download speed, which ain't bad for free.
Oh, and it's based on the Atheros 5414 chipset. It works with FreeBSD out of the box, and since it's Atheros there are all sorts of funky things you can do with it.
I am suitably impressed.

It is neat to watch the labradors play. They are just under a year and a half old and probably at their full size. They like to mix it up with each other. Their MOST favorite play is to double tackle Bear. It is something to watch one at the front of Bear and the other pulling on Bear's tail.

"Rape is forcible intercourse with a person who does not give consent. Legal definitions differ from state to state. For example, in some states, husbands are not prohibited from forcing their wives to have intercourse, although this has been challenged in several of those states...
...Researchers have found that male rapists share the following characteristics: aggression enhances their sense of power or masculinity; they are angry at women in general; and they want to hurt and humiliate their victims (Strong & others, 2008).
...By some estimates, 1 in 3 adolescent girls will be involved in a controlling, abusive relationship before she graduates from high school, and 66% of college freshman women report having been date raped or having experienced an attempted date rape at least once (Watts & Zimmerman, 2002). About 66% of college men admit that they fondle women against their will, and half admit to forcing sexual activity.
--
...For example, in one investigation, 655 college students were asked to answer questions about lying and sexual behavior (Cochran & Mays, 1990). Of the 422 respondents who said they were sexually active, 34% of the men and 10% of the women said they had lied so their partner would have sex with them. Much high percentages - 47% of men and 60% of the women - said that they had been lied to by a potential sexual partner...
20% of the men, but only 4% of the women, said they would lie about their results from an HIV blood test."

Welcome to The Session
The exchange of tunes is what keeps traditional Irish music alive. This website is one way of passing on jigs, reels and other dance tunes.
Some of the tunes are well known, and some are more obscure. It's this mixture of the familiar and the new that makes for a good session.

Does anyone know of organizations that are CR compatible, and offer clergy programs ?
I have looked into several organizations over the last few years, but have been unable to find "the right one" for me.
Any suggestion or information would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for research material of a more current, and scholarly nature on Celtic God's.
Was wondering if anyone has suggestions ? (books, web sights, etc).
Many thanks.

A question for you all.
I am looking at Ella Young's 1910 book Celtic Wonder Tales on the Sacred Texts site , She gives Brigit an active role in some stories that look based more or less on old tales. My hunch is that she was starting from old tales and then branching off on her own. But does anyone know more about it?
The illustrations by Maud Gonne are quite wonderful. What a nice little piece of modern Irish history this book is!

This week on The Fashion Show the contestants saw a professional psychic and then designed an outfit based on the card they drew. I have to say everyone drew good cards. There were no Tower cars present. Two of the contestants got the six of swords and this was interpreted as traveling. Another got the four of cups and this was interpreted as "connection with nature". The rest of the cards were the two of pentacles, the four of pentacles and the High Priestess. To me these really speak to relationships in their multiples of two.
Reading over the psychic's shoulder was weird. Her interpretations of the cards were either too simple or they really deviated from the textbook meaning. This was true on the four of cups. This is typically of card of being too sure of oneself and indicates a place of lazy danger. It is not typically a 'friendship, love, nature' card.
The caveat here is that there is not really a thing such as a typical reading. While one does have the textbook to fall back on (traditional meanings), the cards can easily take on meanings different from typical, especially when they care combined with other cards to tell a story. With that said, that four of cups card coulda/shoulda been read different to provide a warning instead of reassurance. BUT, the grand lady they used was a professional psychic and I'm just an engineer, so what do I know? (smile).

Hello All,
I just joined the community, and just restarted the vegan lifestyle. I was last summer, then utterly wasn't, then vegetarian (but eating fish), then I went to China and, my god, there was no paradigm, and now I'm back to vegan. Anyway, I wanted to share with you what I've been cooking, since I just improvise, and if it turns out well, I try to repeat the results.
( Broccoli 'cream' soup )
( Chocolate Sweet Potato Pie )
I'd be happy to post more recipes that I create/augment - I'm a big fan of experimentation, and I love reading all the ideas you all have posted so far.
Thanks!

I've always considered myself a savvy online consumer. I'm an IT professional, a software engineer and independent consultant. I make all my passwords strong, I don't click on popups or install suspicious software, I don't ever purchase anything from shady online dealers or web sites that don't use secure connections. I thought I was fairly vigilant and smart about how I conducted business online.
Apparently not!
Someone, somewhere managed to get the number of the debit card for my business. They went to PayPal and opened up a "one time use" account with my name and the debit card number. They then used this PayPal account to purchase about $450 worth of virtual goods (gold/items) from various sites that sell World of Warcraft junk, in eight separate transactions at eight different web sites. I imagine that the person responsible is quickly turning these unreal items around for real cash, likely at a discount which encourages gamers to buy fast and not ask too many questions. Highly effective money laundering! (Thanks, World of Warcraft!)
I blame PayPal one hundred percent for this. People should not be able to open up new PayPal accounts without some kind of in-person verification, even if it's just a phone call - there need to be more stringent requirements at sign up, especially for so-called "one time use" accounts. I wish PayPal lots of luck in tracking down the malefactor(s) behind this neat little theft... everyone thinks PayPal is "crazy secure" and it's the gold standard for online commerce, yet it is VERY easily compromised. The hackers didn't need any of my bank account numbers or info, they didn't have to decrypt anything, they didn't need any of my passwords or "key questions" regarding personal information, or special images that only I can verify by sight - none of the measures that supposedly make online transactions more "secure". They didn't have to "phish" me. They just obtained the number and my name, and maybe got my SSN and address from one of the big lists floating around the Internet that hackers trade with each other. Calling the person(s) responsible for this "hacker" may even be an insult to real hackers, considering how little effort they needed to expend. (Thanks, PayPal!)
Luckily for me, I check my bank account online on a daily basis. And also lucky that they decided to make a bunch of transactions all on the same day, making it blatantly obvious what was happening. The bank cancelled my debit card (now I have to get a new one and figure out how to readjust all my billing) and PayPal is aware of the situation, so all I have to do is sit back and wait for my money to be given back to me. Maybe it's even possible that I reacted fast enough to stop some of those transactions from going through and screw the "hacker" a little bit and also make the "vendors" selling WoW junk aware that they just got screwed too.
Moral of the story - I will no longer use my business debit card online, will not use it to pay bills, and will not attach it to PayPal. I'll just use my bank's bill paying utilities to pay off my vendors and send them checks for the bills; that should even help my cash flow a little bit because money won't be instantly deducted by them any more. Be very, very wary of PayPal folks! They're the weak link in the chain at this point.
